MyNextGig’s Jacob and Jen Enter the Reality Advertising Trend

As social media continues to drive consumer activity, marketers are increasingly attempting to find ways to blend viral videos and advertising. Sometimes it works, as with Jeff Gordon’s Pepsi test drive, or Evan Longoria’s amazing catch. Other times it freaks people out.

Sometimes, it just generates a TON of shares and internet chatter. Remember the “Carrie” ad that transformed a coffee shop into a house of horrors?

The folks at MyNextGig.com are hoping for a little bit of all of that with their simple, quirky, funny, and – let’s face it – obviously scripted viral advert.

The commercial, which plays like a homemade video, begins with cute blonde “Jen” recording her online video job resume. It’s a neat concept, and her personality and looks squash the question the video begs. That being, “Why are you recording this?”

Then comes the funny, in the form of her underwear wearing, goofball boyfriend “Jacob.” As she tries to talk about what she could offer a potential employer, he cajoles, and cavorts, the ultimate videobomb. It’s one part funny, two parts annoying, but absolutely captivating. What will Jen do next? That is exactly the question the video leaves you with, right before throwing its logo up on the screen for all to see … and, hopefully, search for.

This is an interesting trend which is really a return to the basics – the number one rule here is to be engaging and compelling. You don’t have to ‘fool’ all of the viewers and you don’t have to be perfectly scripted, or seem entirely spontaneous. You just have to keep them watching and leave them entertained. That compelling entertainment, mixed with enough curiosity should be enough to win that all important click through.

If a company can manage to give you enough to make you feel comfortable and compelled to click that link, their ad is a success. If you just watch it and move on, then they missed the mark.
